THE VOICE OF THE ANCIENT BARD

Youth of delight, come hither,
And see the opening morn,
Image of truth new born.
Doubt is fled, & clouds of reason,
Dark disputes & artful teazing.
Folly is an endless maze,
Tangled roots perplex her ways.
How many have fallen there!
They stumble all night over bones of the dead,
And feel they know not what but care,
And wish to lead others, when they should be led.

LA VOZ DEL ANCIANO BARDO

Juventud de deleite, ven aquí
Y mira la mañana que despierta,
Imagen de la verdad recién nacida.
Han huido las dudas y las nubes de la razón,
Las sutiles disputas, los ingeniosos tormentos.
La insensatez es un laberinto interminable,
De enmarañadas raíces que confunden sus caminos:
¡Cuántos han caído allí!
Tropiezan toda la noche con los huesos de los muertos,
Y sienten que ignoran todo menos la inquietud,
Y desean guiar a otros, cuando deberían ser guiados.
